Since November 8th, a new Marvel production stands out with a surprising but incredible trio holding unpredictable powers… I named it : The Marvels ! Beyond the female and representative cast, Kamala Khan, Carole Danvers and Monica Rambeau forge their own group dynamics (strong and endearing) while perpetuating the spirit of the MCU.
The Marvels : What is it about ?
Do you remember the story of Captain Marvel ? Years later, Carole Danvers is now forced to face the heavy consequences following her victory against the Kree civilisation. There planet annihilated from all ressources, they won’t stop at anything to return to it its past glory.
During a « routine » mission, Carole Danvers a.k.a Captain Marvels is suddenly drove into a strange vortex. At the same time, her « niece » Monica Rambeau, is herself on a mission in space to investigate an anomaly in a teleportation network in obit on the earth. When both women come into contact unknowingly, their powers and those of Kamala Khan (Miss Marvel) get intermingle in a disastrous way. From now on, whenever one of them use their powers, they automatically switches places. To stop the source of this very uncomfortable problem, the trio must learn to work together to defeat the terrible warrior Kree, Dar-Ben, who posses a quantum bracelet capable of destabilizing the whole universe.
The Marvels :
Introduced shortly before the end of the third phase, Carole Danvers has became a member —or should I say, a partner— of the selective and devastating Avengers group. While her appearance is (too) discreet, she’s presented as a solitary and powerful heroïne whose sole role is to defend the galaxy. It is therefore four years after her first appearance in Captain Marvel (2019) that we find her alongside two new acolytes freshly introduced to the public : Kamala Khan (Miss Marvel, 2023) and Monica Rambeau (Wanda Vision, 2022).
If Monica and Carole already met since Captain Marvel, their trio with Kamala (who is also unconditional fan of the latter) is no less interesting. Here, the personality of each completes the other : Carole totally detaches herself from her rigid identity and shows a more human facet, Monica is calm but teasing and Kamala Khan remains the naive and endearing girl who completes the group. The three of them forms a multi-generational trio, funny and touching that we do not want to leave yet… or that we hope to see again very soon!
A multitask production
The Marvels starts quite quickly and without any unnecessary length. Within the first fifteen minutes, the villainess shows her face and her motivations, the strong characters make their appearances (Carole Danvers, Monica Rambeau, Kamala Khans and of course, the one and only : Nick Fury) and the main plot is already established. The trio is embarked on a race across the galaxy filled with actions and humor and must learn to exploit the rift that binds their powers. But nothing is simple when tensions within the group and mistakes from the past threaten to disrupt their mission. You will discover it soon enough: nothing is totally white, nor entirely black, and it’s much better like that!
The absolute challenge of this production was to introduce a new trio to the public in this already very apprehended phase 4. Thus, two weeks after its release in theaters, box office’s results testify of the sad interest shown to the movie : The Marvels cumulate only 552,852 entries compared to The Hunger Games : The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes which amassed after only a few days, 613,191 entries. Nevertheless, The three Marvels still managed to forge their own identity and tick all the necessary boxes : a trio with a special dynamic and a representative and diverse cast which, in the end, does not deviate from the main point, the plot.
My conclusion
Shorter than the other films of phase 4 (only 1 h 40 mn), The Marvels does not drag into length but will still manage to catch your attention for the time during. The ending is intriguing enough to open new windows, both on this famous multiverse that we have been selling since the beginning, but also on other long awaited productions – But I don’t want to spoil you!
Questions/answer :
Of course, watching Captain Marvel, Wanda Vision, Mrs. Marvel or Avengers is an advantage if you want to understand the references, but you can totally go watch the movie and settle with flashbacks. You can also look out here, the resume of everything you should know or should remember before The marvels.
There is, in fact, just one scene after the end of the first post generic, but there are indeed two scenes you should wait for : one as an ending and the second after the first credit scene.
The best if for everyone to make their own opinions, but The Marvels certainly does not deserve the hatred. Sure, the female, religious or cultural aspect are important, but they aren’t the points to focus on, since they don’t deviate the spectators from the real plot. In this movie, social prejudices are not denounced, diversity is normalized.
And you, what are your though about it ?
